Helix Earrings: Everything You Need to Know Before You Buy
Share
You know that moment when you see someone with the perfect ear stack and you just… stare? Like, not in a weird way. But in a "I need to know exactly what earrings those are and where they got them" way. Nine times out of ten, the piece that pulls the whole thing together is a helix earring.
I've been making jewellery for over ten years now, and helix earrings are one of the things we get asked about most. What size? What style? Will it turn my ear green? Can I sleep in it? So here's everything I actually wish someone had told me before I got my first helix piercing.
What Is a Helix Piercing, Exactly?
Your helix is the upper cartilage of your ear. That curved ridge along the top. A helix piercing sits anywhere along that curve, and it's one of the most popular second (or third, or fourth) piercings people get because it's so versatile.
You can go tiny and minimal. You can go bold with a chain. You can stack three in a row. There's genuinely no wrong answer here, which is part of what makes it so fun.
Helix Hoop Earrings vs Helix Studs: What Works Best?
This is the big question, and the honest answer is: it depends on where you're at in your piercing journey.
Helix Studs
If your piercing is newer (under six months), a flat-back stud is your safest bet. It sits flush against your ear, doesn't snag on anything, and lets your piercing heal without being fussed with. Simple.
Helix Hoop Earrings
Once you're fully healed (we're talking six to twelve months, sometimes longer for cartilage), that's when hoops become your best friend. A small sleeper hoop in your helix is one of those pieces you put in and forget about. It looks effortless, it's comfortable, and it works with literally everything.
Quick rule of thumb. If you're healing, go with a stud. If you're healed, hoops and chains are fair game. And if you're not sure whether you're fully healed, give it another month. Your ears will thank you.
Why Material Matters More Than You Think
Here's where I get a little passionate (seriously). The material of your helix earring matters so much, especially while your piercing is healing or if you have sensitive skin.
Cheap metals cause irritation. That redness, that itching, that weird crusty thing that won't go away? Most of the time it's your body reacting to nickel or low-quality plating that's already worn off, not an infection.
We use 14k gold-filled for all our helix piercing earrings (not plating). Gold-filled has a layer of real gold that's 100 times thicker than standard plating. It's waterproof, hypoallergenic, and it won't tarnish or irritate your skin. You can shower in it, sleep in it, forget about it completely. That's kind of the whole point.
If you want to go deeper on why this matters, we wrote a whole guide on jewellery for sensitive skin and another on whether you can shower with gold-filled jewellery (spoiler: yes).
Our Favourite Helix Earring Styles
After a decade of designing earrings, these are the helix pieces our customers come back for again and again.
The Beaded Helix Piercing
This one is tiny, textured, and adds just the right amount of detail to your ear stack without competing with everything else. It's the piece that makes people lean in and say "wait, what is that?" Perfect if you want something a little more interesting than a plain ball stud. Shop the Beaded Helix Piercing.
The Freshwater Pearl Chain Helix Piercing
If you want a helix earring that genuinely stops people in their tracks, this is it. A freshwater pearl connected by a fine chain that drapes along your ear. It's elegant without trying too hard, and it photographs beautifully (trust me, your mirror selfies will improve). Shop the Pearl Chain Helix Piercing.
Sleeper Hoops
The classic. Our Sleeper Hoop Earrings and Sleeper Bead Hoop Earrings are some of the most popular helix hoop earrings we sell. They click shut securely, they're lightweight enough to sleep in, and they come in sizes small enough to sit perfectly in a helix piercing. No fiddling, no falling out.
How to Style Your Helix Earrings
Styling your helix is really about balance. Here are a few combinations that always work.
The minimal stack is one sleeper hoop in your helix, a small stud in your lobe. Clean, classic, done.
The curated ear is two or three helix piercings with a mix of studs and hoops, graduating in size. Add a chain piece like the Pearl Chain Helix for movement.
The everyday ear is one statement helix piece (like the Beaded Helix) paired with simple gold huggie hoops in your lobes. This is the "I woke up like this" look and it genuinely works every single time.
The best part about helix earrings is that you can mix and rearrange whenever you want. Your ear stack doesn't have to be permanent. Play with it.
Helix earring care tips
Keep it simple.
For new piercings, clean twice daily with saline solution. Don't twist, don't touch, don't change the earring for at least three months (longer is better for cartilage). Be patient. I know it's hard.
For healed piercings, with gold-filled jewellery you really don't need to do much. Wear them in the shower, wear them to the beach, wear them to bed. They're built to keep up with your life. That's why we make them the way we do.
