How to Clean Gold-Filled Jewellery (It's Easier Than You Think)

Someone DM'd us the other day asking what special jewellery cleaner we recommend and honestly? Warm water. That's the whole answer for 90% of situations.

Gold-filled jewellery barely needs cleaning. That's kind of the whole point of it. But after months of daily wear (shower, beach, gym, sleep, sunscreen, repeat), a quick refresh can bring back that just-out-of-the-box shine. Here's what we actually do with our own pieces.

The everyday clean (30 seconds)

This is all most pieces need, most of the time:

  1. Run the piece under warm water
  2. Wipe gently with a soft cloth (microfibre works perfectly, or even a clean cotton t-shirt)
  3. Pat dry

That's it. No special products, no ultrasonic cleaners, no polishing compounds. The gold layer on gold-filled jewellery is thick and durable. You don't need to treat it like it's fragile, because it isn't.

The deeper clean (for pieces worn daily for months)

If your piece has some buildup from sunscreen, moisturiser, or just the general grime of living life, here's the slightly more involved version:

  1. Fill a small bowl with warm water and a tiny drop of mild dish soap (like Morning Fresh, nothing harsh)
  2. Let the piece soak for 5 to 10 minutes
  3. Gently brush with a very soft toothbrush (a baby toothbrush is perfect) around any detailed areas, clasps, or chain links
  4. Rinse under clean warm water
  5. Pat dry with a soft cloth and lay flat to air dry completely

You'll be surprised at the difference. Like, "wait, was it always this shiny?" levels of difference.

What NOT to use

Gold-filled is tough, but it's not invincible. Avoid these:

  • Jewellery cleaning dips and chemical solutions. These are designed for solid gold or silver and can be too harsh for gold-filled. They can actually strip the gold layer faster
  • Toothpaste. Old wives' tale. Toothpaste is abrasive and can scratch the surface
  • Baking soda paste. Same issue. Too abrasive for regular use
  • Ultrasonic cleaners. The vibrations can weaken solder joints over time, especially on pieces with charms or clasps. Not worth the risk for something that only needs warm water and a cloth
  • Bleach or ammonia-based cleaners. These will damage any jewellery, gold-filled included

How to care for specific piece types

Hoop earrings and studs

The easiest to care for. A wipe with a soft cloth every week or two keeps them gleaming. For hoops with details (like our Butterfly Thick Hoop Earrings), a soft toothbrush around the butterfly detail once a month removes any dust buildup.

Necklaces and chains

Chains can trap sunscreen and moisturiser between the links. The warm water soak works well here. Lay flat to dry rather than hanging, so water doesn't pool in the clasp mechanism. Our Thin Snake Necklace is one of our easiest pieces to maintain because the smooth chain doesn't trap product the way textured chains can.

Rings

Rings get the most contact with hand wash, sanitiser, and general life. Give them the warm soak treatment once a month if you wear them daily. Pay attention to the inside of the band where product and dead skin cells build up (glamorous, we know, but someone had to say it).

Pieces with freshwater pearls

Pearls are natural and slightly more sensitive than gold. Wipe them with a damp cloth rather than soaking, and avoid submerging them in soapy water for long periods. The gold-filled components can handle the soak, but pearls prefer a gentler approach.

Storage tips that prevent the need to clean

Good storage habits mean less cleaning overall:

  • Store pieces flat, not tangled in a jewellery box. Tangled chains scratch each other
  • Keep pieces in a soft pouch or lined box when you're not wearing them for extended periods
  • Separate gold-filled from sterling silver. Silver tarnishes and the tarnish can transfer to gold-filled pieces stored alongside them
  • Don't leave jewellery on damp bathroom surfaces. The moisture from a steamy bathroom won't damage the gold, but standing water or damp cloth contact isn't ideal for any metal long-term

How often should you clean gold-filled jewellery?

Honestly? Most people don't need to actively clean their gold-filled pieces more than once a month, if that. A quick wipe with a cloth after wearing handles 90% of it. The full warm-water soak is more of a seasonal thing, or for when a piece has been through a particularly intense few weeks (beach holiday, festival season, that sort of thing).

If your pieces look dull, try the simple cloth wipe first. You'll be surprised how often that's enough.

"I bought these earrings 4 years ago and they have been my favourite everyday earrings ever since. I wear them day in day out and have never tarnished. Always receiving compliments still!"
