Cross necklace buying guide: what's actually worth it
Share
I've been wearing a cross necklace on and off since I was about nineteen. There's something about the shape that just works, you know? It sits beautifully at the collarbone, it layers well with everything, and it has this quality of looking intentional without trying too hard. Whether you're drawn to it for what it means or just because you love the aesthetic (both are completely valid, by the way), finding the right one takes a little more thought than it looks.
Because here's the thing with cross necklaces specifically: the market is absolutely flooded. You've got fine jewellery at one end, $12 gold-plated ones at the other, and a massive, confusing middle ground where you genuinely can't tell what you're buying until it turns green on your neck three weeks later. Not ideal.
So this is the guide I wish I'd had. What to look for, what to skip, and which ones are actually worth your money.
What to look for in a cross necklace
Material first, everything else second
Honestly, this is the one thing that separates a cross necklace you'll wear for years from one you'll quietly retire to the back of your jewellery dish. The material determines whether it tarnishes, whether it irritates your skin, and whether it survives daily life (sweat, showers, the beach, all of it).
The four main options you'll come across:
- Gold-plated: A very thin wash of gold over a base metal. It looks great for about a month, then the plating wears off and you're left with something that turns your skin green. Skip it unless you're buying something you only plan to wear once.
- 14k gold-filled: A solid layer of 14k gold bonded under heat and pressure to a brass core. It's 100x thicker than gold plating and legally has to contain at least 1/20th gold by weight. This is the sweet spot for everyday jewellery. Waterproof, hypoallergenic, tarnish-resistant, and built to last years.
- Sterling silver: Beautiful, classic, and a solid choice, though it does require a bit more care to prevent tarnishing over time.
- Solid gold: The gold standard (literally), but you're paying for it. Worth it if you want something truly permanent.
If you're not sure what the difference between gold-filled and gold-plated actually means in practice, I wrote a whole post breaking it down: Gold-Filled vs Gold-Plated: What's Actually Worth Your Money. Worth a read before you buy anything.
Size and scale
Cross necklaces come in a genuinely huge range of sizes, from tiny and almost-hidden to quite bold and statement-making. Neither is wrong, but they wear very differently.
A mini cross sits quietly at the collarbone. It's the piece you put on and forget about, which is a compliment (obsessed with that quality in a necklace). It layers beautifully with other chains and adds something without demanding attention.
A larger cross is more of a focal point. Great on its own, or as the anchor piece in a layered stack. It reads more intentional, a little more editorial.
Think about how you actually dress day to day. If you're mostly in basics, a smaller cross that you can stack with a pearl or a simple chain will probably get more wear than something bold. If you tend toward more minimal outfits where one piece does the talking, go bigger.
Chain weight and length
This one gets overlooked so often and it really shouldn't. The cross itself might be perfect, but if the chain is too flimsy, it'll curl and twist constantly. If it's too heavy for the pendant, the whole thing sits wrong.
For a mini cross, you want a chain that's fine but substantial enough to hold its shape. A ball chain or a fine cable chain both work beautifully. For a larger cross, a slightly chunkier chain holds the proportion better.
Length matters too. 40cm (16 inches) sits right at the collarbone. 45cm (18 inches) sits just below. If you're planning to layer, 40cm for the cross and then stepping up in length for each additional chain is the formula that works. (More on that in our necklace layering guide, if you want the full breakdown.)
Clasp quality
Lobster clasps are the standard for a reason. They're secure, they're easy to do up yourself (unlike spring ring clasps, which are fiddly and annoying), and they last. If you're buying a cross necklace and the clasp feels thin or flimsy, that's usually a sign the whole piece was made cheaply.
Our top picks
The Mini Cross Necklace
This is the one. Our Mini Cross Necklace is exactly what I mean when I talk about a cross necklace that just works. The proportions are right, the cross itself is small enough to sit quietly but shaped clearly enough that it reads instantly. It's the kind of piece you put on in the morning and forget you're wearing, which means you'll actually wear it every single day.
It's 14k gold-filled, so it's waterproof, hypoallergenic, and won't tarnish, turn green, or irritate your skin. We've been making jewellery for over 10 years and this is consistently one of the pieces people come back to buy again as a gift for someone else because they love theirs so much.
The Mini CZ Cross Hoop Earrings (for the full cross moment)
Not a necklace, but if you're building a cross-themed stack, our Mini CZ Cross Hoop Earrings are the obvious pairing (seriously, the combination is so good). The cubic zirconia cross sits inside a fine hoop. It's subtle but specific, and it pulls the whole look together without being costume-y about it.
Also 14k gold-filled, also completely waterproof. You can wear these in the shower without a second thought.
The Small Cross Thick Hoop Earrings
If you want something with a bit more presence, the Small Cross Thick Hoop Earrings are genuinely one of my favourites in the whole range. The cross cutout in a thick hoop is a stronger look, a little more fashion-forward. Wear them with the Mini Cross Necklace for a considered, cohesive stack, or let them do the talking on their own.
How to style a cross necklace
Wearing it solo
A mini cross on a fine chain at the collarbone is one of those combinations that genuinely goes with everything. A white tee, a blazer, a slip dress, a crewneck. It adds just enough without competing with anything else you're wearing. This is the everyday-luxe formula and it works every single time.
Layering it
Cross necklaces layer beautifully because the shape is so distinct. You can pair a mini cross at 40cm with a plain ball chain or bead chain at 45cm and the contrast between the pendant and the plain chain is what makes it interesting. Add a third layer at 50cm if you want to go further, something with a pearl or a simple bar for texture.
The rule I always come back to: vary the chain style as well as the length. Two identical chains at different lengths just look like you're wearing multiples of the same thing. A cross pendant chain, a plain chain, and a pearl chain at three different lengths is a proper stack (trust me on this one).
Matching with cross earrings
This is a look I've been wearing a lot lately and it's simpler to pull off than it sounds. Keep both pieces on the smaller, finer side and it reads editorial rather than matchy-matchy. Our Mini CZ Cross Hoop Earrings with the Mini Cross Necklace is the combination I'd start with.
How to keep your cross necklace looking good
14k gold-filled is genuinely low maintenance, but a few habits will keep it looking brand new for years rather than just months.
- Put your necklace on after you've applied perfume, not before. Perfume sprayed directly onto gold-filled can accelerate dullness over time.
- Pat it dry after swimming rather than leaving it wet. The gold-filled construction handles water fine, but no reason to leave moisture sitting on any jewellery.
- Store it flat (or hanging) rather than tangled in a pile. Tangles cause micro-scratches on the chain over time.
- Clean with a soft cloth every few weeks. That's genuinely all it needs.
If you want the full breakdown on care, this post covers it.
Frequently asked questions
Is a cross necklace appropriate for everyday wear?
Absolutely. A fine cross necklace in gold-filled or sterling silver is one of the most wearable everyday pieces you can own. It's specific enough to look intentional but understated enough that it works with basically everything in your wardrobe.
Can I wear my cross necklace in the shower?
If it's 14k gold-filled, yes. The solid gold layer doesn't react with water the way gold plating does. You can shower, swim, and sweat in it without worrying. Here's more on why gold-filled handles water so well.
What length chain should I get for a cross necklace?
For most people, 40cm (16 inches) is the sweet spot. It sits right at the collarbone, which is where a cross necklace looks best. If you have a longer neck or a broader frame, 45cm might suit you better. If you're planning to layer it with other chains, 40cm gives you the most flexibility to build below it.
How do I know if a cross necklace is good quality?
Look for 14k gold-filled or sterling silver as the base material. Check that the clasp is a lobster clasp. Look at the weight of the chain relative to the pendant, it should feel balanced. And honestly, if the price is under $30 and it claims to be gold, it's almost certainly plated and won't last.
Will a gold cross necklace irritate sensitive skin?
Not if it's 14k gold-filled. The thick gold layer acts as a barrier between the brass core and your skin, so there's no nickel or base metal making contact. If you've had reactions to jewellery before, gold-filled is the safest option short of solid gold. More on that in our sensitive skin jewellery guide.
