Everyday jewellery that actually lasts: your honest guide

I've been making jewellery for ten years, and the question I get more than any other is some version of: "Why does my jewellery turn green after a month?" It's not a silly question. It's genuinely confusing out there. The phrase "everyday jewellery" gets used on everything from a $5 pair of studs to a $500 pair of hoops, and the word doesn't tell you anything about whether a piece will last a week or a decade.

So here's what actually matters when you're building a collection of everyday jewellery you'll reach for every morning without thinking twice.

What does "everyday jewellery" actually mean?

It means pieces you leave on. You sleep in them, shower in them, wear them to work and to the beach and out on a Friday night. You don't take them off because you forgot they were there. That's the standard. And not all metals can meet it.

The three materials that genuinely hold up to everyday wear are 14k gold-filled, sterling silver, and solid gold. Each has its place, and I'll get into all three below. But the one that gives you the most for your money at an everyday price point is 14k gold-filled, which is why that's mostly what we make.

The material question (this is where most people go wrong)

Gold-plated jewellery is everywhere, and it looks incredible in the packet. The problem is that plating is a microscopically thin layer of gold over a base metal, usually brass or zinc. Once that layer wears away, which happens fast, especially with daily wear, water, and sweat, you're left with whatever is underneath. That's usually what's turning your skin green.

14k gold-filled is completely different. The gold layer is mechanically bonded to a brass core under heat and pressure, and it has to contain at least 1/20th of its total weight in gold by law. That works out to 58.3% gold content in the surface layer, which is 100 times thicker than standard plating. It won't tarnish, won't turn green, and won't irritate your skin (no nickel, no lead, no cadmium). You can shower in it, swim in it, and wear it to the gym.

If you want the longer breakdown on exactly how it works, I wrote a whole post on what gold-filled jewellery actually is. Worth a read if you're deciding what to invest in.

The pieces worth wearing every day

Not gonna lie, when I think about everyday jewellery, I think about the stuff that's already on your body before you're even dressed. The pieces that just live there. Here's what that looks like in practice.

Earrings you don't take out

Hoops and studs are the obvious starting point. But size matters more than most people realise. A 12mm hoop sits right at the lobe and works for every occasion without snagging on anything. Go too large and it stops feeling like everyday jewellery and starts feeling like a decision.

12mm open hoop stud earrings in 14k gold fill, perfect everyday jewellery

Our 12mm Open Hoop Stud Earrings ($114.99) are one of our best sellers for exactly this reason. The open design keeps them from feeling heavy, and the stud backing means they're not going anywhere. People tell us they forget they're even wearing them, which is honestly the highest compliment a pair of everyday earrings can get. (Obsessed with how many people say they've stopped taking these off to shower, that's the point.)

If you want a little more presence without going too dramatic, the 20mm Open Hoop Stud Earrings ($124.99) hit a sweet spot. Still comfortable for all-day wear, just a bit more visible.

Rings that stack

A good everyday ring is one you can wear in the shower, the gym, and on a night out without thinking about it. The 3mm Beaded Ring in sterling silver ($109.99) is exactly that. Clean, textured, and works alone or stacked with two or three others.

If you want something with a bit more personality, the Beaded Ring With Freshwater Pearl ($129.99) adds a single real pearl in the most understated way. Not costume jewellery. Not trying too hard. Just a nice ring you'll genuinely wear every day.

A necklace that never comes off

The gold chain necklace is the foundation of every good everyday jewellery collection. I'd go for something fine enough to layer but substantial enough to see. Our Bead Chain Necklace in 14k yellow gold fill ($127.99) is consistently one of the first things people reach for when they're building out an everyday collection. It layers, it works alone, and the bead chain catches the light in a way that feels a little special even when you're wearing it every single day.

What to actually look for when you're buying

Here's my honest shortlist of what separates everyday jewellery that lasts from the stuff that doesn't.

  • The metal is 14k gold-filled, sterling silver, or solid gold. If it just says "gold tone" or "gold colour", it's plated.
  • There's no nickel. Nickel is the most common cause of jewellery-related skin reactions. If a brand doesn't mention it, ask.
  • The brand mentions waterproof or water-resistant properties specifically. Not just "suitable for everyday wear", anyone can write that.
  • Clasps and closures are secure. A necklace with a flimsy lobster clasp is going to spend more time lost in your bathroom than on your neck.

If you've got sensitive skin and have been burned before, I'd point you to our post on jewellery for sensitive skin, it goes through which metals are actually safe and why.

How to care for it (so it actually lasts)

14k gold-filled is built for daily wear, but a little basic care goes a long way. Avoid spraying perfume directly onto your pieces. Chlorine pools are fine for swimming in with gold-filled jewellery on, but prolonged exposure won't do it any favours, so rinse off after a pool swim. Pat dry rather than rubbing. Store pieces flat when you're not wearing them, ideally in something like a proper jewellery box rather than a pile on your bathroom shelf. (Tangled chains are a genuinely terrible start to any morning, trust me on this one.)

Beyond that, gold-filled genuinely doesn't need much. It won't tarnish like sterling silver. It won't turn your skin green like plated pieces. Just wear it and enjoy it.

The bottom line

Everyday jewellery should make your life easier, not more complicated. It should be on your body, not sitting in a box because you're scared to ruin it. When you invest in the right materials, 14k gold-filled, sterling silver, real pearls, you stop thinking about your jewellery and start just wearing it. Which is the whole point.
