Gold Filled Earrings: Your Honest Buying Guide
Share
I've been making gold filled earrings for over ten years, and the question I still get almost every day is some version of: "Are these actually worth it? Will they last? Will they turn my ears green?" So I figured it was time to write the honest guide I wish existed when I started.
Gold filled earrings sit in this sweet spot that a lot of people don't know about. They're not cheap costume jewellery. They're not fine jewellery prices either. They're the thing in between that actually holds up, and once you understand why, buying them gets a lot easier.
What "gold filled" actually means (and why it matters)
Gold filled means a solid layer of 14k gold has been pressure-bonded to a brass core. Not dipped. Not painted. Bonded. The gold layer in gold-filled pieces has to be at least 1/20th of the total weight by law, which makes it about 100 times thicker than standard gold plating.
That 14k gold part is 58.3% pure gold, by the way. So when you're wearing 14k gold-filled earrings, you're getting a genuinely substantial layer of real gold against your skin, not a flash of colour that wears off after a few weeks.
If you want to go deeper on the material itself, I wrote a whole post on what gold filled jewellery actually is, worth a read if you're still on the fence.
What to look for when buying gold filled earrings
The metal quality
Not all gold filled is the same. Look for 14k gold filled specifically. Some brands use 12k or even 10k, which gives you less gold coverage. At The Littl, every gold piece is 14k gold filled, it's the only version we've ever made (we've been doing this for ten years and we're not changing now).
Also check whether the posts and findings are gold filled too. Some brands make the earring face gold filled but use surgical steel or base metal posts. That matters a lot if you have sensitive ears.
Hypoallergenic credentials
Honestly, this is the reason most people switch to gold filled in the first place. If you've spent years avoiding earrings because they make your ears itch, swell, or crust over, gold filled is usually the fix. The thick gold layer means no nickel, no lead, no cadmium touching your skin. It acts as a proper barrier.
Our Classic Stud Earrings in 14k Gold Fill are probably our most-recommended starter piece for people with sensitive ears. Simple, clean, and worn every day by people who never thought they could wear earrings without a reaction.
Waterproof and wearable every day
One of the things that sets gold filled apart from gold plated is that you can actually wear it every day without watching it fade. Shower in it. Wear it to the beach. Sweat in it at the gym. The gold-filled construction doesn't react with water the way plating does, so you're not constantly taking it on and off and worrying about it.
That said, I'd still rinse your earrings after heavy pool sessions (chlorine is harsh on everything) and keep perfume away from them. Pat dry after swimming and store them flat. That's genuinely all the care they need.
The style question, hoops, studs, or something else?
Gold filled earrings come in every style imaginable, which makes this both easy and overwhelming. Here's how I think about it:
- If you want something you'll literally never take off, start with a hoop or a plain stud. These are the ones that go with everything and that you'll forget you're wearing (in a good way).
- If you want a bit more presence, thick hoops are having a moment that honestly never seems to end. They look more expensive than they are and photograph beautifully.
- If you want something a bit different, statement studs with CZ or freshwater pearl are the move. They dress up a plain outfit without trying too hard.
Our top picks in gold filled earrings
For the everyday minimalist
The Classic Stud Earrings at $74.99 are our bestseller for exactly this reason. Small, perfectly proportioned, works with everything. These are the earrings you put in on a Monday and take out on a Friday (or not at all, honestly).
If you want a little more sparkle without going full statement, the CZ Centre Stud Earrings are gorgeous. A single cubic zirconia stone set in 14k gold fill, not flashy, just quietly lovely.
For the hoop lover
Not gonna lie, I could talk about hoops all day. Our Milan Hoop Earrings are one of those pieces that people come back for, there's something about the proportion that just works. Solid 14k gold filled, waterproof, and they sit beautifully without spinning or drooping.
If you want something with more weight to it, the thick hoop silhouette is worth trying. Our Butterfly Thick Hoop Earrings have a butterfly detail pressed into the band that catches the light in the best way (obsessed). They're $159.99 and hands-down one of our most photographed pieces.
For something with texture and interest
The Freshwater Pearl Clam Shell Thick Hoop Earrings combine real freshwater pearls with that thick hoop shape and I genuinely think they're one of the most beautiful things we make. Each pearl is hand-selected, so they're all slightly different, that's how you know they're real. At $164.99 they feel like a treat, but they're also the earrings people wear to both a job interview and a beach wedding, so the cost-per-wear works out pretty well.

Gold filled vs gold plated, the short version
If you're still weighing this up, the difference comes down to thickness. Gold plating is a microscopically thin flash of gold applied by electroplating. It looks identical on day one. By month two it's fading, and by month six it's gone. Gold filled has a layer 100x thicker, which is why it lasts years rather than weeks.
I wrote a longer comparison if you want the full picture: gold filled vs gold plated, what's actually worth your money. But honestly, if you've already had the experience of watching "gold" earrings turn silver or green, you already know the answer.
How to make your gold filled earrings last
Gold filled is genuinely low maintenance, but there are a few things worth knowing:
- Rinse after pool or ocean swims. Chlorine and salt don't damage gold filled the way they damage plating, but a quick rinse keeps things looking fresh.
- Put your earrings on last. Perfume and hairspray aren't great for any jewellery, spray first, then dress, then earrings.
- Store them flat if you can, or in a small pouch so they're not scratching against each other.
- A soft cloth buff every now and then will keep them looking new. That's genuinely it.

Frequently asked questions
Will gold filled earrings turn my ears green?
No. The green skin reaction comes from copper or low-grade base metals reacting with your skin. The thick gold layer in gold filled earrings acts as a barrier, so there's no metal-to-skin contact. If you're getting a reaction from gold filled earrings, it's worth checking whether the posts are also gold filled or whether they're a different metal.
How long do gold filled earrings last?
With normal everyday wear, years. We have customers who've been wearing the same pieces for five or more years (seriously). The gold layer is substantial enough that it doesn't wear away under regular conditions. Heavy chemicals and rough treatment will shorten that, but for daily wear, including showering and exercise, they hold up really well.
Is gold filled the same as solid gold?
No, and it's worth being clear about that. Solid gold is pure or near-pure gold all the way through. Gold filled has a solid brass core with a thick gold outer layer bonded to it. Solid gold is significantly more expensive and is what you'd buy from a fine jeweller. Gold filled gives you the look and much of the durability of gold at a fraction of the price. We don't sell solid gold earrings, if that's what you're after, a fine jeweller is the right place to go. But for everyday gold filled earrings that look beautiful and last, we've got you covered.
Are gold filled earrings good for sensitive ears?
Generally yes, and for most people they're the answer to years of avoiding earrings altogether. Because the gold layer is so thick, there's no nickel or base metal contact with your skin. That said, everyone's skin is different, if you have an extremely severe metal sensitivity, it's worth starting with a simple stud and seeing how your ears respond before committing to a bigger piece.
Can I wear gold filled earrings to the beach?
Yes. That's actually one of the main reasons people love them. Salt water, sun, sweat, gold filled handles all of it. Just give them a rinse when you get home and pat them dry. Easy.
