Gold-filled jewellery: what it is and why it lasts

I've been making jewellery for ten years, and the question I get most often, by a long way, is some version of this: "Is it real gold?" And honestly, I get why people ask. The jewellery space is full of confusing terms, vague marketing, and pieces that turn green after a week. So let's actually talk about gold-filled jewellery, what it is, why it behaves differently to plated, and whether it's worth your money.

So what actually is gold-filled jewellery?

Gold-filled jewellery is made by bonding a solid layer of 14k gold to a brass core using heat and pressure. The gold layer has to make up at least 1/20th of the total metal weight by law, which means it's 100x thicker than standard gold plating. That thickness is the whole reason it behaves so differently.

At 14k, the gold itself is 58.3% pure gold. So you're not getting 9-carat flimsy stuff, you're getting proper gold, just bonded to a base rather than through and through. It's not the same as solid gold (which is gold all the way down), but it's genuinely not comparable to plated either. They're different categories.

If you want to read a full breakdown of how gold-filled sits between plated and solid gold, I wrote a whole post on gold filled vs solid gold that goes deep on the numbers.

Why it lasts so much longer than plated

Gold-plated jewellery has a microscopically thin layer of gold on top, usually applied through electroplating. It looks beautiful in the shop. It can look great for a few weeks. But it wears away, because there's simply not enough gold there to withstand daily contact with your skin, sweat, water, and friction.

Gold-filled is different because the layer is thick enough to actually hold up. Most of our pieces have been in people's daily rotation for three, four, even five years without tarnishing. I have customers who wear the same Bead Chain Necklace in the shower every single day and it still looks the same as when they bought it (obsessed with the longevity on this one, genuinely).

We also wrote a whole post on this if you want more detail: gold-filled vs gold-plated, what's actually worth your money.

Is gold-filled jewellery waterproof?

Our gold-filled pieces are designed to withstand water, sweat, and everyday wear. You can shower in them, swim in them, exercise in them. The thick gold layer doesn't react with water the way plating does, so you're not going to see that horrible green tarnish that happens when plating wears through to the base metal underneath.

Not gonna lie, this is the thing I'm most proud of with our range. We designed pieces that you could genuinely never take off, not because we want you dependent on us, but because the best jewellery is the kind you forget you're wearing. If you want the full run-down on why, I wrote a detailed post on showering with gold-filled jewellery.

What about sensitive skin?

Gold-filled jewellery is hypoallergenic. The thick gold layer acts as a barrier between your skin and the brass core, so there's no nickel, lead, or cadmium making contact with you. For anyone who's been through the cycle of buying cheap earrings and ending up with itchy, irritated ears, this is why gold-filled works when other things don't.

We hear from customers with sensitive skin all the time who had basically given up on wearing earrings before trying ours. The Classic Stud Earrings are usually the first thing I recommend because they're the most skin-friendly starting point (trust me on this one, they're a bestseller for exactly that reason).

How to care for gold-filled jewellery

The good news is it doesn't need much. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Avoid harsh chemicals directly on the piece, chlorine and perfume are the main culprits. Put your jewellery on after you spray, not before.
  • If you've been swimming in a pool, a quick rinse in fresh water and a pat dry goes a long way.
  • Store pieces flat when you're not wearing them, not tangled in a pile. A proper jewellery box makes a difference.
  • Clean with a soft cloth when needed. That's genuinely all it takes.

What we actually make with it

Our entire 14k yellow gold-filled range is built around one idea, jewellery that works for real life. Pieces you can wear every day without babying them. Things that still look good after a year of showers, sunscreen, and the beach.

If you're just starting to build a collection of pieces you'll actually keep, the 14k yellow gold-fill collection is a good place to browse. Everything there is designed to be worn every single day, won't tarnish, won't turn green, and won't irritate your skin.

Have you been burned by gold-plated pieces before? Or are you already a gold-filled convert? Either way, I'd love to know what brought you here.

P.S. If you're deciding between gold-filled and sterling silver, I wrote a post on that too: gold filled vs sterling silver, which is actually worth it. Worth a read before you commit.
