Flat back earrings: your honest buying guide
Share
I've been getting so many questions about flat back earrings lately, and honestly, I get it. Once you try one, a regular butterfly back feels basically medieval. That little flat disc sitting flush against your skin instead of a sharp post digging in all day? Life-changing is maybe too strong a word, but only maybe.
So if you're shopping for flat back earrings and not sure where to start, metal, style, where to even wear them, this is everything I'd tell a friend who asked.
The short answer: our top picks
These are the three I'd point you to first, depending on what you're after.
Best for something timeless: Freshwater Pearl Flat Back Piercing
Freshwater Pearl Flat Back Piercing, 14k Solid Gold, $189.00 (pre-order, made for you). A single real freshwater pearl on a solid 14k gold flat back. This is the one that goes with everything, helix, lobe, second hole. Classic without being boring.
Best for something with a little more going on: Freshwater Pearl Cluster Flat Back Piercing
Freshwater Pearl Cluster Flat Back Piercing, 14k Solid Gold, $249.00 (pre-order). Multiple real pearls grouped together on that same flat back post. More visual impact, still totally wearable every day.
Best for a diamond moment: Round Lab-Grown Diamond Flatback Piercing
Round Lab-Grown Diamond Flatback Piercing, 14k Solid Gold, $179.00 (pre-order). A lab-grown diamond, set in solid 14k gold, on a flat back post. This is the everyday luxury piece, subtle enough for work, special enough for everything else.
All three are from our TL Fine range and are pre-order, made to order for you. Worth the wait.
What actually makes a flat back earring worth buying
Not all flat backs are equal. The style looks the same across the board, a post with a flat disc that screws or presses into place on the back. What differs is the quality of the metal and the setting, and that's where it gets interesting.
Metal matters more than you'd think
Flat back earrings go in piercings that might be healing or sensitive. Surgical steel is the most common budget option, and it's fine, but if your skin reacts to metals, or you want something that'll last more than a season, 14k solid gold is the one. It's biocompatible, it won't tarnish inside the piercing, and it looks better for longer. All of our flat back earrings are 14k solid gold, which is why they sit in our TL Fine collection.
If you've had reactions to cheaper earrings before, this guide on jewellery for sensitive skin is worth reading before you buy anything.
The closure type
Flat backs come in two main closure styles: threadless (push-fit, where the top just presses into the post) and internally threaded (where the top screws in from the inside). Both are fine, the key is that the threading, if there is any, should be on the inside of the post, not the outside. External threading scraping through a piercing is not a fun experience (trust me on this one).
The top, what's actually on the flat back
This is where all the personality is. A flat back post is basically a blank canvas. A simple ball, a pearl, a diamond, a cluster, whatever sits on top changes the whole look.
For a helix or cartilage piercing, something slightly more substantial, like a pearl cluster or a diamond in a bezel setting, reads really well. For a lobe, you can go either direction: a tiny single diamond for subtlety, or a pearl for a bit more presence.
Our full flat back earring range
Honestly, I'm pretty proud of what we've built here. We spent a long time on the TL Fine range before launching it, and the flat back piercings were a big part of that. Here's everything we have.
Pearl flat backs
The Freshwater Pearl Flat Back Piercing ($189.00) is the single pearl, 14k solid gold version. Clean, classic, real pearl, not synthetic. Each freshwater pearl is hand-selected, so there's slight natural variation in each one, which I actually love. You can swim in them (real pearls can go in water), though I'd suggest giving them a break when you can since the lustre can soften a little over time from prolonged water exposure. Normal wear and tear, same as anything.
The Freshwater Pearl Cluster ($249.00) is the one for when you want your cartilage piercing to do the talking. Multiple real pearls, all on that same 14k solid gold post. It's more of a statement, but still a really wearable one.
Diamond flat backs
All of our diamonds are lab-grown, set in 14k solid gold. Worth saying: lab-grown diamonds are chemically and visually identical to mined diamonds, the only difference is where they came from. We always say lab-grown because that's what they are, and we think you should know what you're buying.
- Round Lab-Grown Diamond Flatback Piercing, $179.00. The most classic of the diamond options. One round diamond, prong set, solid gold post.
- Round Diamond Bezel Flatback Piercing, $179.00. Same diamond, but wrapped in a bezel setting, a little rim of gold that holds the stone. More protected, slightly different look. Great for active wearers.
- Classic Round Diamond Flatback Piercing, $199.00. A step up in presence from the standard round. Still understated, but you'll notice it.
- Round Lab-Grown Diamond Trio Flatback Piercing, $249.00. Three diamonds instead of one. This is the one people ask about when they see it on someone's ear (obsessed).
- Double Bezel Diamond Dangle Flatback Piercing, $269.00. Two bezel-set diamonds on a tiny dangle drop from the flat back post. Refined, still very wearable.
- Diamond Bow Flatback Piercing, $449.00. This one is something special. A bow shape, set with lab-grown diamonds, in 14k solid gold. Made to order, genuinely beautiful.
All of these are pre-order, made specifically for you. We never apologise for that, something made to order in solid gold is always going to be worth waiting for.
Where to wear flat back earrings
The obvious answer is: anywhere you have a piercing. But let me be more specific about where flat backs actually shine versus a regular butterfly back or hoop.
Helix and cartilage piercings
This is the main reason people switch to flat backs. A traditional butterfly back sitting against your cartilage is uncomfortable at best, sleep-ruining at worst. A flat back sits completely flush, nothing protruding, nothing catching on your hair or your pillow. If you have a helix or cartilage piercing, a flat back post is genuinely a better everyday choice than almost anything else.
Second and third lobe piercings
A flat back in your second hole, a hoop in your first, that combination is consistently one of the best ear stacks going. The flat top reads like a polished stud but sits more securely than a standard push-back.
Fresh piercings
Many piercing studios now use flat back posts as their standard jewellery during healing, because they're less likely to snag and less likely to put pressure on the back of the piercing. If you're getting something new done, ask about flat backs specifically.
How to care for flat back earrings
Our flat back earrings are 14k solid gold, which is genuinely low-maintenance. A few things worth knowing:
- Clean gently with a soft cloth. For the setting around a stone or pearl, a soft toothbrush with warm water works well.
- Avoid perfume and harsh chemicals directly on the piece. Spray your perfume first, then put your earrings in.
- For pearl flat backs: you can wear them in the shower or swimming, but giving them a gentle rinse after and patting them dry will help keep the lustre longer. Pearls are porous, and while water won't ruin them, prolonged exposure can soften the surface over time.
- Store them somewhere they won't get knocked around. A small pouch or a jewellery tray works perfectly.

Frequently asked questions
Are flat back earrings better for sensitive ears?
In general, yes, but the metal matters more than the closure style. A flat back in surgical steel might still irritate sensitive skin. Our flat backs are 14k solid gold, which is hypoallergenic and one of the safest metals for piercings. No nickel, no lead, no cadmium.
Can I sleep in flat back earrings?
Much more comfortably than a standard butterfly back, yes. Because there's no protruding piece on the back, there's nothing to press into your neck or catch on your pillowcase. Plenty of people wear flat backs full-time for exactly this reason.
Are these suitable for a fresh piercing?
Flat back posts are widely recommended for fresh piercings. That said, always follow the advice of your piercer for aftercare and jewellery choices, especially in the first few weeks. 14k solid gold is considered one of the best metals for healing piercings.
What's the difference between threadless and internally threaded flat backs?
Threadless (push-fit) tops press into the post and are held by a slight bend in the pin. Internally threaded tops screw into the post from inside. Both are good options. The one to avoid is externally threaded, where the threading is on the outside of the post and passes through the piercing as you insert it. Our pieces don't use external threading.
How long does a pre-order take?
Our TL Fine flat back earrings are made to order, so we never invent a date. We'll keep you updated from the moment you order. Made-to-order means your piece is made specifically for you in 14k solid gold, not sitting in a warehouse somewhere.
If you're looking at our full earrings collection, you'll find everything from flat backs through to hoops, huggies and more.
