Solid gold flat back earrings: your honest buying guide

Flat back earrings have been on my radar for a while now, and honestly once you try them you never go back to butterfly backs. There's something so satisfying about a backing that actually sits flush against your ear, no sharp post poking you when you lean your head on a pillow, no butterfly clip falling off in your bag, no fussing around when you're half awake trying to get ready.

But if you're going to commit to a style you'll wear every single day, especially in a piercing that needs to heal or stay happy, the material matters a lot. Solid gold flat back earrings are genuinely worth it, and I want to walk you through exactly why, plus which ones are actually good.

The short answer: our top picks

If you just want to know what to buy, here they are. All three are from our TL Fine range in 14k solid gold, and most are made to order (so worth the wait, genuinely).

Best for everyday wear: Round Diamond Bezel Flatback Piercing

Round Diamond Bezel Flatback Piercing in 14k solid gold with lab-grown diamond, solid gold flat back earrings by The Littl

Round Diamond Bezel Flatback Piercing, 14k Solid Gold, $189.00 (IN_STOCK)

A lab-grown diamond set in a bezel of 14k solid gold. The bezel setting protects the stone beautifully, keeps it low-profile, and the whole thing sits perfectly flush. This is the one I'd reach for first.

Best classic stone: Classic Round Diamond Flatback Piercing

Classic Round Diamond Flatback Piercing in 14k solid gold, solid gold flat back earrings with lab-grown diamond

Classic Round Diamond Flatback Piercing, 14k Solid Gold, $209.00 (IN_STOCK)

A brilliant-cut lab-grown diamond in a prong setting, in 14k solid gold. It catches the light more than the bezel does. If you want something that really sparkles in a helix or lobe, this is it.

Best for something a little different: Freshwater Pearl Flat Back Piercing

Freshwater Pearl Flat Back Piercing in 14k solid gold, solid gold flat back earrings with real pearl

Freshwater Pearl Flat Back Piercing, 14k Solid Gold, $199.00 (pre-order, made to order for you)

A real freshwater pearl on a 14k solid gold flat back post. Soft, luminous, and genuinely beautiful for a helix or a lobe stack. Pre-order, made to order, and worth every day of the wait.

What actually makes solid gold the right choice for flat backs

Not gonna lie, I used to think people were being precious about needing solid gold for piercings. Then I heard from enough customers with irritated helix piercings who'd been wearing mystery metal for months. The skin around a piercing is in constant contact with whatever the post is made of. A flat back earring goes through the piercing itself, which means the material really counts.

14k solid gold is 58.3% pure gold, with the rest being alloy metals for strength. It's genuinely hypoallergenic, contains no nickel, no lead, no cadmium. For anyone with sensitive skin or a piercing that just won't calm down, switching to solid gold is often the thing that actually fixes it. If you're curious about how solid gold compares to other materials like gold-filled, I wrote about it in detail here: gold filled vs solid gold: which is worth it?

The other thing about 14k solid gold is that it doesn't tarnish, doesn't wear through to a base metal underneath, and won't turn your piercing green. It's a piece you buy once and wear for years. (Genuinely, this is not marketing.)

What to look for when you're buying solid gold flat back earrings

The karat

14k is the sweet spot for flat back earrings. It's 58.3% gold, which gives you the colour and hypoallergenic properties of gold while being strong enough to hold its shape as a post. 18k (75% gold) is softer, which isn't ideal for a post that goes through a piercing. 9k is fine but it's a lower gold percentage and the colour can look a little dull.

All our TL Fine flat backs are 14k solid gold, that's a deliberate choice, not just a price point.

The post length

This matters more than people realise. Flat back earrings come in different post lengths (typically 6mm, 8mm, 10mm) to accommodate different ear thicknesses and placements. A lobe piercing usually needs a shorter post than a helix or cartilage piercing. If you're unsure, it's worth asking your piercer before you buy, they'll tell you the exact length that works for your anatomy.

The front design

This is where it gets fun. The front piece (the decorative part you see) is separate from the flat back post and screws on. So you can technically mix and match if the threading is compatible. The most popular options for everyday wear are:

  • A bezel-set stone (protective, clean, very wearable)
  • A prong-set stone (more sparkle, slightly more open)
  • A pearl (soft and a bit unexpected in a helix)
  • A dangle (more of a statement, the Double Bezel Diamond Dangle Flatback at $279 is stunning if you want something a little more)

Lab-grown vs mined diamonds

Every diamond in our TL Fine flat back range is lab-grown. Lab-grown diamonds are physically and chemically identical to mined diamonds, same hardness, same brilliance, same everything. They're not simulants like cubic zirconia. They're real diamonds, grown in a controlled environment. If anyone tries to tell you otherwise, they're wrong (lol). We love them because they're a more considered choice and the quality is consistent.

Solid gold flat back earrings for sensitive skin

If your ears have reacted to earrings before, this section is for you. The most common culprits are nickel (used as a hardener in a lot of cheaper gold-plated jewellery) and the base metals that are exposed when gold plating wears off. Both of those problems go away with solid gold.

14k solid gold contains no nickel, no lead, no cadmium. The whole post is gold alloy, not just the surface. So there's nothing underneath waiting to cause a reaction once the coating wears through, because there is no coating. You can read more about this in our guide to jewellery for sensitive skin if you want the full picture.

Flat back earrings are also specifically recommended for sensitive or healing piercings because the flat disc backing sits snugly against the skin without any sharp edges or moving parts. Less irritation from the back = happier piercing.

Caring for your solid gold flat back earrings

Honestly, solid gold is the lowest-maintenance metal you can own. Here's all you really need to know:

  • You can shower and swim in solid gold without worrying. It won't tarnish or react with water.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals directly on the piece, chlorine and perfume are fine if they hit the gold, but don't soak it in bleach or cleaning products.
  • Clean with a soft cloth when needed. If it's been in a piercing for a while, a gentle warm water rinse works well.
  • Store flat or in a small box, not tangled with other jewellery. The front piece can unscrew so keep an eye on that.
  • If your pearl flat back gets water on it regularly, that's fine, just rinse and pat dry. The pearl itself can handle water, though keeping it out of heavy chlorine when you can will help preserve its lustre over time.

That's genuinely it. Solid gold doesn't ask much of you. (One of my favourite things about it, honestly.)

FAQ

Are flat back earrings only for helix piercings?

Nope. They work beautifully in lobe piercings too, especially if you like a cleaner look at the back of your ear. A lot of people switch to flat backs for their lobes just for the comfort of it. They're also popular for tragus, conch, and forward helix piercings.

Can I put a flat back earring in myself?

Once the piercing is healed, yes. The front piece unscrews (lefty loosey, righty tighty, never backwards), and you insert from the front while holding the flat disc behind. If your piercing is fresh or still healing, let your piercer change it for you the first time.

How do I know what post length I need?

If you're not sure, ask your piercer. They can measure your piercing and tell you the exact post length. Getting this right matters for comfort and for healing, so it's worth checking rather than guessing.

Are the diamonds in your flat backs real?

Yes. Every diamond we use is a real lab-grown diamond, set in 14k solid gold. Lab-grown diamonds are chemically and physically identical to mined diamonds. We always say lab-grown because we think it's worth knowing where your stone comes from.

What's the difference between solid gold and gold-filled for flat backs?

Gold-filled has a thick layer of 14k gold bonded to a brass core, it's genuinely durable and waterproof for most everyday wear. But for a post that goes through a piercing, solid gold is the better choice because the entire piece is gold alloy, not just the surface. If you want the full breakdown of the two materials, we covered it here: gold filled vs solid gold: which is worth it?

P.S. If you're between the bezel and the prong setting and can't decide, go bezel for everyday, prong for occasions. Both are beautiful, but the bezel is more forgiving if you're active or tend to catch your jewellery on things. (Trust me on this one.)
